Tips for Working with Autistic Students

  1.  Approach the student quietly from the side.  This gives them time to process that you are approaching them.  Also it avoids startling them, which can sometimes be difficult to calm themselves down.
  2. Whenever possible, use non-verbal communication.
  3. Be very literal and use direct instructions.  Avoid any sarcasm and idiomatic phrases.  Such as:  “First put the book away, and then sit in your chair.”
  4. Use a calm even tone of voice.
  5. Use visual supports whenever possible.
  6. Don’t take any behaviors personally.
  7. Encourage the child to become involved socially.  Have them answer questions and talk to other students.
  8. Be sure to give the student plenty of time to respond before repeating any instructions.
  9. Use structure whenever possible.  Be sure the student knows what they should be doing.
